What is the difference between working drawings "usually done by consultant" & workshop drawings done by a contractor ?

I've been working for a consultant for the past10 years. We do tender package "drawings & documents". I'd like to know your point of view for the main differences between workshop drawings & tender drawings "Architectural discipline and others"

Well , first of all , i think working drawings is a general definition for technical detailed drawings and this shall involve the shop drawings too , but about your question about the difference between the tender drawings issued by consultant and shop drawings issued by contractor: first about tender drawings they have to involve any detail that might affect the tendering process , ie the price but only in general , like type of aluminium window , thickness and type of its glass , whether fixed hinged or sliding , and there is always a good link between these drawings and the annexed specs and methods of measurement , so whatever you don't enclose in your tender drawings as detail you have to clarify in specs , like type , thickness and material of aluminium section , but , in shop drawings the contractor zooms in for every part in his work for either of the two reasons , reason one to get approval of consultant on them , which has to be matching with the contract specs and approved material submittals , also to facilitate the work for the labour working in site and inform them of every single detail they need , for example fixation and assembly detail for aluminium sections , at last there is one very big difference between shop drawings and tender drawings , because most of shop drawings are in enlarged details , some times1/1but tender drawings usually come in less enlarged details , i hope my answer did clear it , regards.

Architectural Working Drawings by Design Consultant is one of many documents required prior to Tendering process. These are the documents where the contractors estimation department will look into detail and if it lacks in information, too many tender clarification will be raised. In this regard, the contractor must be vigilant enough to understand the consequences later during and after construction. After, the consultant will prepare IFC drawings (Issued for Construction), these drawings are the construction drawings prepared by the "expert CAD Architects" (not a draftsman) in different fields, like, Blockwall  Drawing, Doors and Windows, Curtain Walling, Toilet and Bath, Interior fit out, and many others. Drawing must be sufficient enough and must be providing correct information as much as possible, all in relevance to building construction and in conjunction with the rules set by the Authorities. With this, the Main Contractor will be able to produce his SHOP DRAWING submittals accordingly for approval and must be according to time table set. In the absence of information, an RFI will be raised to suffice the lacking information or to solve an impending detail design issues. And the process will go on until such time that all design drawings will be shown into a more realistic one, putting everything into record and providing a more accurate as - built drawings at the later stage. In this area, to my point of view, the design consultant must be able to put into their archives all the detail design produced during the process and become a set of standards in the next coming project to lessen disputes among the contractors and the clients.

I have been working on fabrication drawings and shop drawings since10 to11 years of2D integrated Drawings and3D Integrated Modeling.

Drawings developed by the design office is to providing the details and information as per design, mostly covered by providing Typ. Details and are caled Tender or IFC Drawings. There are two stages, Construction with Final Design Drawings in hand or Design and Built Stage.

Drawings developed by contractors called shop drawings (For Rebar) and Fabrication drawings (For Steel), in which complete details are provided for each component / element with bar bending schedules for rebar and material list for steel work. Every small detail should be provided in the drawings with bar mark in Rebar and piece call out in Steel. All materail procurred as per list of material developed by detailing exact length and quantities which minimize the wastage and ultimately cost control. Any fault in design can also be rectified thru RFIs. Its actually a phase between design and construction and shop drawings are integrated drawings with architectural and MEP.

Working drawings are a way of clarifying what you want, but shop drawings are a way of explaining how is it going to be done, it's like a presentation made by the seller (contractor) to show the buyer that he do understand to the smallest detail what is wanted, and so to make sure every on are in the same page.

It's more of a quality assurance activity than a quality control

Drawings done by consultant are usually drawings to identify or clarify the design strategy required and signed according to the contract between the client and the design office, which could be the case that it's also the consultant. Drawings done by contractor are also known by shop drawings, can and should be the final drawings on which the contract will rely directly to execute the final product.
