You need to be awrae about your customer needs & how to position your services to compete others.

it depends on the product and services it self, is it high involvement  product or low involvement product.

is the price controlling the market or the quality of the (product / services). or maybe the brand name is the motivation .

actually  it's irrelevent, but if you ask me in the publishing industry i believe my answer will be the quality of the book ( values / knowladge / quality of information) and the price too.

You can only know your customers' primary motivations after you are exactlly aware of the unique selling proposition of your product/service and its ability to gratify and satisfy the potential customer. You can do that through a mix of quantutative and qualitative research. Please do remember, qualitative research is a very difficult part and requires moderators who can cut through the barriers, respondents' courtesy bias and act as facilitators rather than judges or arbiters. 

The Product should enrich the productivity of a customer, only then he would buy
