How do mothers deal with children who are picky eaters?

If you know for a fact that the child is "picky" and it is nothing to do with allergies I think that there is only one course of action and that is to tell them that like everyone else in the family they will eat what is put in front of them or they will do without. Sweets and other such edible treats are completely out of the equation until the family meal regime is adhered to.
