What are the qualities that are considered unprofessional in a manager or leader ?

To a great extent I was able to influence people in my sphere of work. At times I was not able to influence others and that made me look into this important phenomenon to understand  the factors that contributed to my failed attempts and goaded me to initiate corrective measures.

If the integrity of a manager is questionable  and behaves in an unethical manner, then it is one of the first and foremost unprofessional trait. Similarly if he or she is biased and partial to his team members the manager in question is definitely unprofessional. If he or she is not punctual and shows favouritism and takes sides in a conflict is also unprofessional. If the manager is simply unapproachable and terrorizes his team memners is also unprofessional . the list could go on and on. However   I would like to high light what are the characteristics of an effective manager rather than dwelling upon what traits are considered inappropriate or unprofessional!

The ability to form mutually respectful relationships with others and to succeed in getting your ideas heard is a vital element of being a good manager. Having influence enables you to gain support and commitment for your proposals and therefore increase your potential for success. Influencing people will help you build your communication skills, improve your ability to engage the interest and cooperation of others.

Effective influencers are convincing and trustworthy and both these traits require self- management. In order to persuade others to accept your point of view, it is necessary to present a clear case that matches their needs. To be able to influence, let your enthusiasm for your ideas show without letting it blind you to other people’s views. To be able to win minds. You must research your subject and present a good case.

Good managers  work with others to create agreements, build relationships and achieve results

As per Roy Johnson and John Eaton the following are the steps necessary to be able to influence people in a positive manner

1.    UNDERSTANDING INFLUENCE

·         Order your thoughts logically before you present

·         Study the technique of public speakers

·         Improve your credibility by being well informed

2.    MANAGING YOURSELF

·         Manage your emotions well

·         Develop your confidence. Look and sound confident, well-rehearsed and polished. Be composed.

·         Be alert to feelings of others and adopt what you say

·         Become a natural optimist- look for solutions rather than dwelling on problems

·         Be honest and courteous. Create trust and be trustworthy by speaking from a position of knowledge, keeping your promises, supporting others and work through  differences

3.    PRESENTING IDEAS : effective influencers are open and constructive communicators

·         To be able to persuade some one to your point of view your ideas should be organized. Present ideas logically

·         Engage the interest of others

·         Ask focused questions to help identify needs

·         Focus on reasons

·         Make your explanations as simple as possible

·         Inspire individuals and teams so that they are  motivated to achieve the goals you have set out

·         Create a mental picture of a desired future to help make it happen.

4.    EXERCISE INFLUENCE

Your success as a manager is dependent on the help and cooperation of others. Engage the support of your colleagues, team and senior managers and fine tune your influencing skills.

·         Start networking

·         Take the time to introduce yourself to people

·         Write articles, plan events

·         Keep in touch with contacts- telephone, email, cards etc

·         Motivate individuals and teams

·         Secure commitment and get support

·         Build a reliable reputation so that junior and senior managers do trust you

·         Respect diversity and everyone’s right to disagree

·         Create dialogue, focus on agreements, find solutions

If I will enumerate all the not so desirable quality of a manager probably all the managers who will read my answer will definitely raise an eye brow... I don't like a manager who is not a LEADER, when I say Leader it comprises everything. UNDESIRABLE TRAIT OF A MANAGER IS NOT BEING A "LEADER".

A positive characteristic of a manager (quality) is for instance to always motivate his employees to achieve more accomplishments. But, when he doesn't know when it's enough and he is never happy with the results to the point of employee's exhaustion and frustration then the quality becomes a negative attitude and characteristic. He should know the human limits and to have to ability to change according the circumstances.

I don't know of any "quality" that labels a leader or a manager "unprofessional"! A quality is a trait, an attitude or a feature with positive added values & a complimentary connotation & a perception of goodness or excellence, non of which are related to the adjective "unprofessional"! I may know a long list of attitudes & traits that make manager unprofessional, like the ones listed by respected colleagues here, but not a single quality, as all qualities should add to the professional mix not the unprofessional ones. I am going to stick to the first answer that popped up in my mind after reading the question, whether yet another brilliantly tricky one or just a confusing one (to MY linguistic understanding of the word quality)!
