I work on Adobe CS4 but many a times I am faced with those "the file was created in a more recent version of this software" errors and I am stuck!! Does this also happen in real-time? What is the alternative and how important is it to have the latest updated version?

updated photoshop is important (espically in your case cuz there is alot of new tools and tweeks happned since CS4) ... you can always check adobe wesite for a quick information about the major changes ...
but to sum up ... upgrading from CS4 will be very helpfull to you ...
