Who is the boss (TOGAF and Business Strategy)?

I've had an interesting discussion with one of my ex-colleagues the other day. We ware discussing about how the strategy process is running in his organisation. He is an enterprise architect in a leading organisation I was telling him that I am working on lots of Strategy Work and I don't have detail technical understanding of TOGAF. I only understands TOGAF as a concept and I am fine with it. Then he was suggesting that I should be progressing towards Enterprise Architecture/TOGAF. and made a comment that Strategy of an organisation should be governed by EA. That make me thinking about this a lot. In my opinion while specific EA tools (such as TOGAF) provides good framework on Strategy implementation. Strategy should not be governed/directed by EA, but the architecture of the enterprise has to be modelled to meet the organisation strategy. What are your thoughts on this ?

Totally agree with all answers. No boss, all are from strategy to manage end to end solution.

Totally agree implementation of strategy can be governed by Togaf. Togaf is a framework which will guide you on how to implement the strategy by giving tools / templates.

Actually it is not necessary to have the same boss for Enterprise Architecture and Business Strategy  but there should be an alignment .

Quite an interesting question.

The bosses for both the functions are always different. But between Enterprise Architecture and Business Strategy, I believe Business Strategy is the boss as it will drive the Enterprise Architecture.

Without a strategy, how will you derive the data/application/infrastructure architecture?

If the strategy is fluid, you will need to adopt a fluid architecture - a set of systems that can be molded as your strategy grows.

If you have a strong long term (5yrs, 10yrs) business strategy, you know the things you are going to do. Based on this the data/application/infrastructure strategies will differ accordingly.

I am surprise somebody who knows togaf has suggested such a thing. I can somewhat relate because togaf can be confusing initially. The simple answer is business Strategy is not given by togaf because togaf helps you define system requirements and monitor it till completion with best results. Togaf can also help you define comprehensive business architure by providing guidelines and tools however strategy comes from cubs business directly.

As a certified enterprse architect, I totally disagree with what your friend has said and also disagree about what you think about TOGAF. TOGAF helps the organization to move from the baseline (status quo) to the desired target for a specific job to sort out certain concerns of the company`s stakeholders and practically it restructure your application, data& infrastructure to meet your business requirements. Your comany strategy is considered and guide  your work with the Togaf until you meet your project objectives.

There is no boss ,IT strategy controls every thing ,but how we implement this strategy this is where togaf guide us ,so strategy is the starting point and togaf make it real

Yes, i agree with you. During my work with different hi-profile customers, i noticed that using an architecture framework helped us speed up and simplify architecture development, ensure more complete coverage of the designed solution, and make certain that the architecture selected allows for future growth in response to the needs of the business.

When you consider technical IT architecture, any business executive worth employing would tell you they have a business plan that is documented and represents the vision of where the business is going. Why should technology be exempt from that rigor?  We need to have a very well considered technical strategy, and a technology governance process, and those two things need to be intrinsically linked to the business strategy. They need to assist and influence the business strategy as much as they are influenced by it, and that really is the role of the technology architecture...
