LAN stands for Local Area Network where as WAN stands for Wide Area Network.
Difference: As the name implies the LAN is either a single network or multiple connected networks in the same campus or building.
WAN connects different LANs which are sperated by geographical locations. The WAN is used to interconnect multiple buildings or campus in different geographical locations.
The simple answer, LAN for Local Network (example: Lan with Network Cable) and WAN for Wide Area Network (Example VSAT)
LAN it is the Network between computers that you are the only owner of it , that ISP not the owner
WAN it is the Network between computers that the ISP has devices between your computers Network
LAN and WAN are just a type of private network. As internet is a public network.
Private network means we can use these networks for our private communications only.

WAN: (Wide Area Network)Two or more computers or communicating devices which are geographically separated and are in different metro city if connected are said to be connected on WAN. Internet is largest WAN.
Two or more computers can be connected to each other. This helps to exchange data and information between the computer an to share the resources. Such interconnection of computer forming network is also called a web .
LAN is Local area connection it is used in small room or smal office to share a documents,files etc.

WAN: When two or more computers or communicating devices are connected in a Room or in a Floor or in a Building but seperated geographically or not in a same city if they are connected they are said to be connected on WAN.
When the physical media in your network topology is owned by you solely, its called a LAN, else its a WAN. Moreover, when you access some share remotely and by involving some Service Provider, its a WAN.
The difference is mainly based on the Geographical Area the networks cover. Anything under One Square KM can be considered as LAN. Where as a WAN which connects lot of LAN's, spans across the whole planet. The Internet is also a WAN.

WAN is a large network, when more than two companies are interconnected and communicating, that whole network is considered as WAN!!
