Snapshot is a term coined by NetApp for the point in time copy of the system state and it has been widely used as a data protection feature in NetApp systems.

 

Today most of the storage vendors support snapshots

Commonly it means saved actual state of system/partition/memory/repositories, and so on. Snapshot of system usually means backup of entire system.
