Introduce the "pupil" to some very basic English poetry, nothing too "heavy" and then show the correlation between that poetry and especially with youngsters, the connection between poetry and pop music which after all is poetry to music. No doubt many of them sing along to the latest "hits" once they understand that they are in effect reciting poetry, engaging with more "formal" poetry might then seem less daunting.

Irish Limericks are very simple and amusing "poems" to use as an initial introduction, they are basically short rhymes and although poetry doesn't necessarily have to rhyme much of it does and this would be an elementary introduction.
