First of all3Ds max is not a BIM (Building Information Modelling) software.
It's just a3D graphics tools.
People use3Ds Max just for producing the high quality rendered image of the architectural design and walk through movies of the design.
Make a model in Revit Arch and export it to3Ds max for rendering and for dynamic walk through is the best practice done.

Three reasons why Revit rendering is better at "INITIAL PHASE" or "DESIGN PHASE":

1. You will save alot of time by Rendering directly in Revit, rather than exporting and importing and setting up another lighting system, fixing modeling issues etc...

2. You will do yourself and the project a big favour by assigning correct material in Revit, because Revit material can be part of the delivarable information, and can be scheduled and quantified.

3. Revit rendering capabilities has been improved drastically in the past few years almost to the level of professional renderers. It has built in Mental Ray engine, with simpler interface than3DS Max.

On the other hand, if you need high-end renderings with professional-grade effects and more importantly animated environments and people, then you have to use3D Studio Max. This can be at the final stage of a design proposal for use in selling or marketing your design, if the project size justifies the production cost and time.

1- Because the philosophy of Revit & Max is entirely different.
2- So in some stages it may be the replacement but not all.
3- But out there what you mean by in initial stage, its unclear ?
4- So it will not be possible to answer the question perfectly.

3DMax is a presentation Tool and is not accurate. The visulaizer with design intent enhances some areas it want to emphasize to the client, sometimes distorting the image to achieve a result. Whilst Revit, from preparing onto2d layout, encoding the finishes, materials is as accurate as we could get when presenting onto perspective.

So, can we replace the3dmax with Revit. With the above statements which do you prefer, accuracy or presentation.

For me, with more than20 years of professional experience in General construction, Civil work, Interior Fit out, I vote for Revit.

Yes it is a better idea to use Revit initially because it gives you accurate measurements and makes it very easy to create sections of the outer building or floor. The only reason why 3ds Max is preferred over Revit in the later stages is that Revit limits the modification of furniture and rendering quality while 3ds max is one of the worlds leading software to create realistic views and representations.
