i belive the  best gift you can give your customer is solutions.

i don't think gifts will turn your customers away from other suppliers unless you are giving them a new car. or something of great  value.

in real life favours are given inorder to facilitate deals.

as from ethics point of you that is unacceptable.

there is no harm in it specially when you manager is also involved.

Do as the manager has instructed but remember this - Many companies now have policies regarding the acceptance of Gifts & Bribes or 'kick backs' as they were one called.

In Pharmaceutical industry, directly gifts are considered as unethical practice and yes, several giveaways and promotional material is being used to reinforce the brands and generating the prescriptions. We must never indulge in such activity, if company prohibits.

My experience says that you should known the situation better which has waranted your manager to give a gift to selected customer But remember it could be a situationional thing and will never replace a professional salesman approach and today customer has asked one gift in lieu of business tomorrow he may ask more and you may help your manager to decide about such customer if you have done sufficient research about the customer in question. However as a Salesman you should realize the fact that the best gift a customer gets is the product of his choice and to augment this a competant and skilled sales man should be able to make the customer to buy through a customer focused sales call which will earn him business alongwith a committed customer.

I think:

The stronger product you sell, the more customer you get. With OR without gifts.

Depends on each company policy- Business promoitons gifts worth $20-30 are OK.

If the gift is given to just build the relationship then it's ok, but to get a biased opinion would be unethical.

Gifts, if they are relevant and timely, they create a stonger family bonds &  ties  between the seller and the buyer on the course of times .

It depends on the time of the event. You may present the gift during public holydays, birthdays, or on some significant time that is interesting to the receiver. It could be an individual customer or a company. The most important thing is , your gift should be relevant to that particular event and it should be associated with ,religious , age, cooler, marital s status, etc . You would not present a bottle of Whisky to a Muslim on Eid Aladha.
