Do you think being tough is a good way to gain respect from your co-workers?

If you are not kind to the Human you can not get respect, if still people afraid of you that is not respect.

sure no , you should be balanced , and customize your way as per your coworker situation

Just be yourself.

More Tolerent you are, more respectful you are.

Being tough can be right attituade sometime depending on culture you are handling or peole you are managing 

Must show respect and flexibility in dealing with colleagues inorder to gain further relations

Being tough and bully is a good way to gain obedience from weak people, but to gain respect and harmony with elite people surrounding you you have to be a  gentlman

Not at all , I  dont  personally agree on it, As my boss acts tough with most of the employees they fake respect him and behind his back they curse him for being rude and tough on them.

I guess one should be tough at times where its needed and justified as we are human beings we all make mistakes and learn from them so people who act tough also have made mistakes

if some people who doesnt listen being soft there is certainly a point to be serious and tough to them or else they dont bother what ever is told and will never do their assigned task

Only if they are trying to make your decisions for you. Otherwise, good communication, banter, and good descison making should work and gain the respect of your co workers 

There is a third way, better be respected and trusted, you do not need to be liked. 

I don't think  this is a good way to acquire respect from my co-woerkers
