In my view, mainly being honest.
Try to be direct, precise and clear with them, but always respectful.
Be helpful and receive bad news with a positive spirit, trying to find solutions rather than being angry.

be a LEADER! http://www.forbes.com/sites/tanyaprive/2012/12/19/top-10-qualities-that-make-a-great-leader/

In my view it is important you be loyal to your employee, you need to be transparent and do not give away any false promises or hope.
However we as in supervisor play some dirty tricks for retaining few employees and this always occur because you are dependent on him/her (or) come under pressure due to attrition percentage.
First of all you need to make yourself right in your disciplines and do not be self centric, i am sure following this your employees will trust you.
Trust is not something that comes in a day, it comes by time and you standing on your words.

In definite, you cannot gain the trust of all the employees.
But, there should be a trust culture cultivated in the firm.
It takes time and effort, but the payback is great, and if ever a new grumpy staff joins the company, he/she will not find an attentive ear to share his sayings.
Now, too much trust in the company can also be counter-productive.
Therefore, the carrot and the stick policy should be implemented and applied, so the employees can feel the difference if their level of productivity is different.
The rules for building trust and gaining it is by letting them trust your words.
Thus, your actions and behavior, as their boss, should reflect your words.
Never give false expectations, keep promises that you had given previously, and to avoid repetitive deceptions, DO NOT GIVE PROMISES WITH HIGH EXPECTATIONS.
Keep them informed of the necessary, but only the strict necessary.
Keep the payroll information like a secret of Polichinelle, means top secret.
Implement the principal of fairness and equity, and make sure it is respected by their superiors.
Try to be less formal and more accessible, but not much, or else you will end up closing your door definitively, and establish a proper channel for employees expression mode.
You can also ask them, about the way they feel, you need to ask an individual about a group of person or department, and not about another employee namely.
Also, not to be forgotten, is they need to trust your ability in management, crisis management, never loose your temper, always give this impression of tranquil power and force.
and over all, BE A LEADER WHO MANAGES LEADERS TOO.

Trust is very important thing to gain and if one gains it then he/she should retain it.
There are following ways one should follow to gain trust and to retain it.
1.
Loyalty : We should always loyal to the company or wherever we are because if we are loyal with other then only we can be loyal with ourselves.
2.
Under commit over perform: We should always under ommit and over perform, because people trust what we say and if we fail to achieve our commitment then it leaves a bad impression in terms of our words and their fulfillment.
and on the contrary: If we commit less and perform more then people will say he always fulfill his commitment.
3.
Once achieve retain it: Once we built the trust among employees then we should strive hard to retain the trust, because its very difficult the build, more difficult to retain and most difficult to rebuild once broken.
Gaining and retaining TRUST is very simple for people who are loyal to self and others.
Always be Loyal and gain trust.
