You need wireless Acces Point to create WLAN there are Brand avaliable to choose like Cisco linksys,Dlink if you have one you can configure the WAP by connecting it to your computer and use the manual referance and CD that comes with the WAP you can change all the default setting on the WAP to your preferance you can configure the following on WAP

 1) SSID (network name that can be desplayed on search

 2) by default the security is off so you can enable to restrict Wireless

 3) signal strength by increasing this you can make the wires covarega Wider

 4) ip addresse and subnet mask

Actually, to build a wireless LAN, you should use devices called Wireless Access Points (WAPs), these access points have modes of operation, first you have to determine if you are going to connect switch to switch or switch to a group of wireless enabled clients.

If switch to switch, then the mode of the access point should be Wireless Distribution System (WDS) or sometimes it is called Bridge and you have to define the MAC address of the other access point connected to the other switch if the topology is Point-to-Point and to define the MAC addresses of the other access points if the topology is Point-to-Multipoint, also the switch ports have to be Trunk ports to allow different VLANs traffic to pass through this wireless connection.

If switch to clients, then the mode of the access point should be Access Point, and the clients have to have Wireless NICs, and the switch port connected to the access point should be Access port and configured to a specific VLAN and then configure the other configurations whether the frequency is2.4GHz or5 GHz, authentication, security, channels etc.

To build a wireless LAN , you will use a wireless access point and you will need to have wireless connectivity on all computers which are to connect with this network. About configuring the access point, each one will come with its configuration progam. If you add wireless network cards to your desk tops, you will need to configure those as well.

Its setup procedure differs to each brand but it’s easy to setup so no worries

If u want to spend less and get the job done go for a Linksys it can do the job

And try to get all the hardware need in one brand. Hope this help's.

Two wireless device can be connected directly through adhoc connection or it can be connected by access point creating WLAN Network

for that you should have appropriate device to access the wlan access point . means laptop or supported phone . Once you get the access point or signal from your  Wlan or else other you just go and double click it , if it give you to enter the any way it want  for password . give proper password then you can access it .

as Lan required switch for connection same as for Wlan Access point (AP) is used for connection. how to configure it is a detailed process like you have to deside how much area coverd and what is data rate between them etc.

WIreless Access Point-- General concept is that wireless access point configured with SSID to which wireless devices connected and normally dynamic IP Addressing mechanism used to assign IP Addresses to devices and for security purpose encryption keys set to access the devices. Different vendors has different interfaces to configure the Wireless Access Points mostly web based.
