I agree that if you're willing to get into something like that, it would be better to try snorkeling, it doesn't require any special training, major expenses, or strong physical effort. Also, I highly recommend you get an underwater camera for snorkeling because you'll be amazed how incredible the underwater world is.
Swimming underwater while using a self-contained breathing apparatus, but I can tell you it's better to get into something like snorkeling first.
