Open source software are softwares shared and being developed publicly, in security stand point this is unsecured since it only relies on support on public developers. More on self coding and scripting to work

Proprietary software on the other hand are software developed by companies which are being updated from time to time, where in it makes it reliable and secure for the users. This makes it more expensive but less work on coding and scripting.

As the name "open source" says thing whose source is open. In terms of software, the source is code and open source means the whose source code is openly available to everyone. Anyone can make the change, modify according to his needs and use that software.

proprietary software is whose code the property of someone. That someone may be an individual or a group who has all the rights to use and modify that code hence software.

The term "open source software" refers to any software that people can inspect, modify and share its source code, and by design is publicly accessible.

it defers than proprietary software, due to the fact that its software is open for any one to use, modify.

but there is a caveat here, you can not sell an open source software as your own, but you can sell after sales service and maintenance.

proprietary software is "closed source" -for lack of a better word-, means you can not see the source code of the software.
