Difference between Standards and Protocols?

Since working with foreign customers always face to adhere the product standards and protocols mixed in documentations. Some customers are keeping the details of products with standards and some are with protocols although all contents whether written under standards are similar to protocols. I feel standards can be change by the passing of time, but protocols would require to change with dismantle the law.
