In new directions of marketing, yes, the customer is better to involve and collect their opinions and expectations in production. This will save money and time for both sides, and will help the producers and manufacturers to make products that meet a wide range of consumer needs.

That is a type of production line which is customized. In the old days, most of the customized work is often related to products which need hand skils, such as jewelry, bakery, tailors, carpentry, smith, etc...

Nowadays, as a marketing strategy, alot of companies tend to let loose of the grip, and allow some sort of customization in certain areas of the production line. But I believe that the main product still exists there, it is just a different finishing which gave the new or unique look to the end product.

It depends on the industry. This is a must in the design-to-order industries. In manufacturer-to-order or manufacturer-to-stock industries, this will apply to the options of the product. Customers may cooperate fully in designing the options of the product, but for the non-optional components of the product, customer particiaption carries less value after starting the anufacturing process.
