Throughout the poem, Maya Angelou repeats the phrase "I rise". This repetition emphasizes her persistence on being free despite whomever wants to keep her shut, quiet and enslaved.

You may shoot me with your words,

You may cut me with your eyes,

You may kill me with your hatefulness,

But still, like air, I'll rise.

In this stanza, Angelou describes herself as air to show that she will always be like air that can't be killed nor shot nor cut no matter how much people try to. She, like air, will always stay and rise despite the hate of others.

In the poem you refer to, Angelou states

"You may shoot me with your words,You may cut me with your eyes,You may kill me with your hatefulness,But still, like air, I’ll rise."

In that stanza, she comments that even if words, glances, and hate can cause pain, it cannot change how she feels inside and her own sense of self-worth is what lifts her (light as air). It also may suggest that what truly makes her unique cna't be physically held. Her spirit is undying and unfettered by the limitations of society and racism. It is a wonderful metaphor for the freedom of her soul.

She doesn't describe herself as air. She uses simile to compare or liken her strong sense of personal dignity, or resolve to get over imagined limitations, to air which also rises and can not be easily manipulated. The rising of one's spirit and air may be intangible at times. What else is similar between people's sense of self-worth and air?

The reasons may be that inspite of fallen or gone through numbers of trails in her life she has risen and fought agianst all obstacles in life. Hence her description of herself as air. Her circumstances did not hinder her, it become her strenght to push forward in life.
