The best is to select the cutting edges and then select the object to be trimmed. You can also done trim by pressing enter button 2 times. But this time all the objects will be selected and this is comparitively difficult than first one.

If you press double space bar/enter after a trim command, you should always select the object to be trimmed but it always gonna trim to the nearest edge(assuming the edge and the object is both on same elevation) but if you command trim with a single space bar/enter it will prompt you to select the cutting edge first and another enter to select the object to be trimmed.

there is tow ways to do that:

1-you enter the trim command (TR) then enter, you select the cutting edges then you select the object to be trimmed.

2-you enter the trim command (TR) then 2 times enter then you select the object to be trimmed.
