Promotion is a communication tool that includes all the activities which aware and persuade customers to buy the product or service. Advertising is a part of the promotion. Therefore, it can be said that advertising is also an act of promoting the product. Advertising is done to build brand image and increase sales, whereas Promotion is used to push short-term sales. Advertising is one of the elements of promotion while the promotion is the variable of the marketing mix. Advertising has a long term effect but at the same time promotion has short term effects. The results of advertising are shown by the passage of time. Conversely, the results of the promotion are seen immediately. Advertising is an expensive tool. Unlike promotion which is an economical tool. Advertising is suitable for medium and big enterprise whereas Promotion is for all kinds of enterprises irrespective of its size.

Advertising is a subset of promotion. It is used of mass media to create awareness about an organisation and its products and services to the target audience. On the other hand promotion is the art of differentiating, reminding, informing and persuading target audience about an organisation and its products and service through direct marketing, advertising, personal selling, public relations and sales promotion techniques.

In essence promotion is wider in scope than advertising.

Promotion does not necessarily mean that it is only for the customer. It can also be for the companies to go hand in hand and get more discounts from one another.

Advertisements and promotions are a part of the marketing segment that helps to grow more customers in any market.
