ISL Cisco proprietary. add 26 bytes header to frame. source vlan identified with a 15 bit vlan id field. also called double tagging. while

802.1q is an open standard. embeds its tagging information within layer 2 frame. referred to as single tagging. add 4 bytes tag field just after source mac address.
