How would you deal with making key decisions that needs to be made immediately on your own accord however you are not authorised to make that choice?

i.e whilst dealing with a client and there are issues that need to be resolved however this require further authorisation but you cant keep the already frustrated client waiting.

Agree in principle and seek confirmation from the person who is authorised as soon as possible.  Let the client know that although you are not authorised to make the final decision, that your boss respects your ability and judgement and will confirm as quickly as he can.
