Just about any computer these days can edit a simple video, even your smart phone!

For serious movie making, you're going to need to step it up a notch.

Especially with 4K video on the horizon, you need a computer that can handle and process all that gobs of information. You don't want your computer crashing every few minutes or sitting there locked in the spinning wheel of death every time you make an edit, do you?

If you just need to edit a simple 1-minute home movie, you can do that on your iPad.

But if you plan to be sitting at your computer for 3-months to a year editing your 60-90 minute feature documentary with multiple layers of video, audio and graphics, you've got some thinking to do to figure out exactly what will work best for your particular needs.

One way to choose your video editing computer is to first decide what video editing software you prefer. Obviously, if you want to edit with Final Cut Pro X, then you'll want to choose a Mac. Or if you've got your heart set on Sony Vegas Pro, go toward a PC.

"Multimedia computers generally have better processors, more RAM and higher-end graphics cards compared to an everyday desktop."

The most important things to consider when buying a computer for video editing is the processing power, storage space and screen size.

Below are a few solid choices to get you started in your search for a video editing computer.

It no longer matters. Get the computer that fits your budget and you like best. I'm a big fan of iMacs as well as DIY built PCs. Please note that some NLEs are Mac only (FCP, FCPX) while others are PC only (Sony Vegas, Grass Valley Edius). Both Avid and Adobe run equally well on PC or Mac. So the programs you want to use are a big factor in the platform decision. The biggest difference is selecting platforms is GPU. Apple gives you limited choices of GPU, while with a PC you have a wide range of choices. Avid & Adobe do tap into GPU, specifically NVIDIA based GPUs.  We have a great article on the Videoguys website about recommended system specs for video editing Videoguys' System Recommendations for Video Editing. You can also find a ton of reviews and guides and articles about video editing on the Videoguys.com  we are the video editing and production experts website. We have Guides for Video storage, Thunderbolt and Video Editing software, plug-ins and hardware.

Whether Mac or PC, I know how seriously frustrating it is to try and edit photos and video on a computer that doesn’t have enough power. I prefer Mac OS because is incredibly stable.

Anytime Mac because Mac is more stable and powerful and you don't have to worry about viruses...It can handle huge amount of footages

I'm user-friendly with both the platforms. However, my first priority will be Mac as it is stable and safe.

Editing 4k on a limited mac specs is just too exhausting.I would rather use PC with powerful specs.Even though mac's screens has better colour views, the specs just outrank it by alot when it comes to PC.
