Hello Joefil,  There was one question the other day I read re 'leadership and project management...' I did not have time to expand on that query but leadership (leaders) and management (managers), as we have come to know, exhibit two different personalities but is indirectly related to this question you posed.

Leadership and trust, the two components are quite closely linked in the context of a project.  What I mean by this is that a leader cannot exercise his authority, and leadership if he does not have the implicit trust from his team.  There are many forms of leadership that is translated through having an authority, e.g. positional, knowledge (SME), moral, etc ... in this context, a PM has authority or could exercise his project management leadership is first and foremost through the position he/she holds.  However, if this is not quickly reinforce by his ability to plan, analyse, monitor and track, execute, etc one would find that the project manager will fairly quickly loose his authority.  Sometimes we say he has lost his 'mojo' and hence the beginning of the end.  Hence, the short of the answer is Leadership cannot do without trust because he will end up as a leader with no followers.

And that is the beauty of Project Management and Programme Management because it is not purely just following processes or adhering to frameworks.  I agree that this is a very important part of the discipline, however, there is a human factor involved.  And that is why, some individuals are better at project management while some are better at being programme managers but there is the third group which span the two spectrum because they are able to work out the processes with a human touch.  

The trust part is where the team would follow the PM to the length that he choose to lead, without which the journey would be rather laborious and there will be casualties of team members leaving along the way.  

Sorry if I am being long winded but yes, there is a strong correlation between the two.
