Do we use a singular verb with a collective noun or a plural verb?

Collective nouns can disrupt university staff rooms during lunch time. " My family is away" or "My family are away?" ( Decisions Decisions...)

A collective noun is just that; it collects many subjects into a common one, and since a family can be counted as 1 subject using the word "family", a singular verb should be used.
