ESX is bare metal hypervisor primarily used for server virtualization and NSX is network virtualization hypervisor

ESX is virtualization Platform for hosting servers and clients(VDI mostly ) 

NSX is virtualization of networks (distributed switches ,firewall, HA etc...)
