In the pmbok there are 9 knowledge areas been elaborated. hence, is there any suggestions whether "safety management" also to be included?

In the PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) there are9 knowledge areas been elaborated such as Integration, Scope, Time, Cost, Quality, HR, Communication, Risk & Procurement Managements. Hence, should it be included Safety Management ?? Is there any suggestions whether it should be included as a knowledge area?(I am referring the PMBOK-4th edition.)

Muhammed - these are my thoughts.

It's a good point you bought up. But we should understand that PMBOK is a guideline / body of knowledge that fits into all Sectors / Industries - Be it IT, Construction, Hospitality, Manufacturing, etc.

"Safety Mgmt" is more towards civil / Construction business. So, i do not think they will ammend the PMBOK knowledge areas. In that case, they will have to also add more corresponding to Hotel Industry, etc.

If you minutely observe, "Safety Mgmt" is already taken care of in PMBOK.

You will have to dig the "RISK MANAGEMENT" knowledge area for this.

EXAMPLE - You are a project manager for a construction site very near to a desert. You will list the various Risks like - (1). What if there is sand-storm - What's the impact, Frequency, etc. (2). Are the materials used good enough to sustain the extreme weather conditions?, etc etc.

What are the MITIGATIONS plans to supress the risks identified, etc.

Hope this helps.

Best Regards, Ananth

First, I would like to thank you for sharing your thoughts with us, it's an important question.

I would like to draw the attention that the updated PMBOK (version5) has the stakeholders as the10th knowledge area.

I believe safety management is within the quality knowledge area, but if it's vital for the organisation to have safety, it may be added, but I do believe PMI try to be as generic as possible, so I think they would not add safety management (although I believe it's very important for physical projects)
