What is a default gateway? What happens if I don’t have one?

Your default gateway is on the same subnet as your computer, and is the gatewayyour computer relies on when it doesn't know how to route traffic. If you don't havea gateway your network communication have no problem. But you cannot communicate with other networks. That means your packet will not reach other networks.

The Default Gateway is an IP address of the Router, which is responsible to forward packets to another network. Usually, a gateway provides internet access to the network devices/computers.

 

If a computer doesn't have default gateway it will not be able to access the Internet or any other network.

Default gateway is responsible for communicate to other network i.e external network. If you don't havea gateway your network communication have no problem. But you cannot communicate with other networks

A default gateway allows computers on a network to communicate with computers on another network.

1- Goto Run enter this value 'CMD'

2- In Command Prompt type 'ipconfig' then Enter

A Default Gateway is the point where your computer will send any data when it is not sure where the data is designated to go. In short, the default gateway, is the one that handles any traffic going OUT of your network.

If you do not have a default gateway, your incoming network communication isn't affected. Instead, you lose communication with other network (outward traffic), no internet access, possibly resulting in an outage.

If you don’t have a gateway your network communication have no problem. But you cannot communicate with other networks. That means your packet will not reach other networks. The best way to confirm this is to see if your computer's local IP address starts with "...." This is an indication that it could not find a device to assign it neither a local IP address nor a default gateway address.
