To calculate the sales tax that is included in a company's receipts from items subject to sales tax, divide the receipts by 1 + the sales tax rate. For example, if the sales tax rate is 6%, divide the total amount of receipts by 1.06. If the sales tax rate is 7.25%, divide the total receipts by 1.0725.

1. Add any applicable sales taxes for the goods sold on the receipt. For example, if you sold electronics and the city has a 1 percent sales tax and the state has a 3.45 percent sales tax, the total tax equals 4.45 percent.

2. Divide the total sales tax by 100 to convert the tax to a rate. In this example, divide 4.45 percent by 100 to get 0.0445.

3. Add 1 to the sales tax rate. In this example add 1 to 0.0445 to get 1.0445.

4. Divide the total receipt by the result to find the retail price. In this example, if the receipt total equals $200, divide $200 by 1.0445 to get $191.48.

5. Subtract the retail price from the receipt total to find the sales tax. In this example, subtract $191.48 from $200 to find the sales tax equals $8.52.
