I think first you should establish a good rapport or relationship with them.

When teaching children, make sure to take the following into account as well:

  • Do not use big words with children or their caretakers
  • Use lots of repetition and positive reinforcement
  • Make sure your goals are realistic to their age and developmental level
  • Ensure the child and caregiver have understood the information by asking them to repeat what they have learned
  • Encourage the caregiver to participate in the activity, even if it seems silly
