GPM (gallons per minute) is nothing but a decree for measuring flow rate generally employed in pumps selection criteria for either chilled water pump (closed system) or water supply pump(open system)

The criteria for finding flow rate or GPM for chilled water system is based on your selection of chiller or district cooling load, The flow rate should be as per there flow requirement based on the cooling load and change in temperate based on formula Q=mCp delta T, where delta T is difference of temperature,The specific heat of water Cp is then4. J/(g⋅°C).m is mass,

In case of water supply system based on USGBC (us green building council )and British standard  the corresponding loading factors to be summed for various fixture(wc,washbasin, flush tank etc.) and then converted to gpm or flow rate based on diversity of building type.

GPM is US Gallons per minutes as the prevailing standard, comes under the IP system of units. If you divide the GPM value by 3.785 the resultant shall be Liter.

GPM is the flowrate of any medium for example water, which can be discharged by a pump , or a from a overhead tank through pipes.

Open loop and closed loop doesnt matters, GPM is estimated only by demand required or how much flowrate required where it is applied.

  1.  this is the information for (Gallon per minute)  Use Bernoulli's equation to determine fluid velocity

Use this equation, (g*h + (P/rho) + (V^2/2)) = constant, to solve for velocity. Upon isolating velocity, the equation will look like this: V = sqrt(2 * ((-P/rho) - g * h)) where P is the pressure, rho is the density of the fluid, g is gravity and h is the elevation above the reference plane.

  2. Determine the flow rate

Using the equation Q = V * A, calculate the velocity. Q is the volumetric flow rate, V is the velocity of the fluid and A is the cross-sectional area of the pipe

GPM is Gallons Per minute, It is calculated by Flow of liquid at a particular notch Against time variable in minute. Usually in HVAC, GPM Required is calculated by cooling capacity i.e., 1TR=2.4GPM.
