There are different types of "research"  ... so which one are you taking about ?

 

  1. Market Research
  2. Product Research
  3. Development Rsearch
  4. Quality Research
  5. Competition Research

Also, there are several approaches, methodologies and techniques in conducting the reaearch, so which one(s) do you mean

 

  1. Quantitiave Research
  2. Qualtitive Research
  3. Analytic Research
  4. Correlelative Research
  5. Mixes mode research

If the company is small and suffers small growth and poor progress as you say,   a quick overall healthcheck assessment may be necessary to identify the problems and explore future potential for growth and good performance
