All logistics, supply chain or procurement professionals might have faced a situation where they chose to import the product via air, which is more costlier, than import it via sea. I have experienced short time required to deliver and Short shelf life of product where importing via air made more sense then importing via sea. What have you experienced?

working in freight forwarding industry, i must tell that air freight is far more costly than sea freight.
well ofcoure it will depend on the urgency of the shipment. as it is well known that transit well be differentiate between the two modes of transport which is sea freight takes more time to reach final destination while air freight well take only few days.

1) The dead line of receiving the cargo.
2) The weight of the cargo, as if the weight is high the Airfreight cost will be very high, and if the weight is very small Airfreight cost of the Airfreight may be less than the sea freight.
3) The value of the cargo, Diamond & jewellery traders always prefer Airfreight for fast and safe handling.
As per logistics concept the goods have to contain the quality and the quantity from the time of dispatch to the destination
The Better and the time consuming way of transportation is AIR only but for all the firms it is not possible mainly coz of the hike in charges
the only reason to select the air freight is for the bulk goods direct to sell in the market which short lead time , speed to market . in addition the cost of sale of these goods for bulk shipping in air will be less .
from Air Freight your transit time will be reduced, clearance will be easy as compare to Sea freight
shipment which has less weight or cbm will give your low cost if you are moving through air freight.

Yes ofcourse, freight forwarder paly a vital roal to move the shipment based on Client's requirement, if its an urgent shipment (timebound) then better to go through Air based on weight of the Cargo. If volume is huge then best way to choose through Sea to curtail the cost.Through Air first have to find shortest route with best freight charges.
As it must be know by the logistics experts,that sea freight is cheaper yet takes longer time compared to airfreight,which costs less,therefore It all depends on how URGENT is the cargo required at the destination!
