They are just looking at it a bit differently. 1. Marketing tries to understand the customer as a generic group/ segment or persona in order to create generic value propositions and 'mass' awareness (however you define that beyond 1:1); Sales seeks to build 1:1 relationships and sees the customer as a specific person, for example "Jim, in Accounting" so that they can tailor their value propositions to each individual. 2. Marketing is long-term focused. Marketing should set the big picture strategy - what is the real market opportunity, how does your company solve a pain point/ need, what products should you lead with, what makes your solution so unique compared to the competition, and how can you generate awareness/ demand at scale. Sales is short-term focused. Yes they want to build long-term relationships, but they also want to close the next deal, and may be inclined to take on clients that aren't "ideal"for your business. Sales can influence how to make your product or service better/ easier/ more valuable for your customers, but they don't own making it happen. 3. Skillsets and traits are different. As a broad generalization - Marketers are usually creative and detail oriented, collaborative, good project managers, with varying levels of strategic, analytical and technical skills. Salespeople are generally competitive, charismatic, resilient, social, great communicators and relationship builders. I've worked in tech B2B organizations and unlike Sangeet's experience, unless the CEO is driving the entire business and product strategy (very rare, as most CEO's are tactical), there comes a point in your business lifecycle where yes, you will need both marketing and sales if you really want to grow.

Despite many differences between the sales and marketing, these are not contradictory in nature. Both these terms are closely interlinked to each other and play a very important role in the survival of business in the long run.

The sale is a human-oriented function, so the personnel involved in the sales activity should be given a proper training and incentives to boost his morale and earn higher revenues in return. On the other hand, Marketing is a media oriented, so the best channels of advertisement and promotion should be adopted to have an increased sales along with the enhanced brand image.

Sales and marketing are both aimed at mounting revenue. They are so closely interlaced; it becomes hard to understand the difference between the two sometimes.

Marketing includes research, development of products/ Services and promoting the product and services. Basically marketing means generating leads or prospects, and sales means converting the leads or prospects into purchases and orders. They work with the push and pull strategy.

Marketing & sales are both aimed at increasing revenues...

They are both so closely interwined that people often dont realize the difference,

Marketing is the systematic planning, while sales is a transaction between two parties when the buyer receives services and/or assets in exchange for money,

also its an agreement between buyer & seller....

Marketing involves many research and promotional activities to try to discover what products or services are wanted and to make potential customers aware of them, whereas selling is focused very much on making consumer demand match the products or services that the organization has produced.

Sales involves known buyer and known supplier. Marketing is from a known supplier to a super set of stakeholders, who might channel to, or identify themselves as a buyer. As a general rule, in marketing the buyer might not be known during the initial phase. Once identified, it will be the sale function to close.
