How do I ask a client for my paycheck?

I recently met with a client for a freelance project. He said that he didn't know my work and needed to test me. My portfolio was not up to date  so I couldn't just give him that link. I spent5 days and gave him3 directions for one logo (with mockups) and4 directions for another. He took the work yesterday and hasn't talked about my pay at al. I'm worried that he thinks its okay to "test me" with work he needs. WHAT SHOULD I DO!?!

first rule of designing is that never ever work for free and when ever you submit those testimonials to client just put your watermark on the logo so that the client can never able to use that thing as this market is full of frauds.
