There piping family is vast and diverse with each type pipe being required for different application. The below list is a summary of the most commonly used pipes for various different application. Below is a brief summary of the most standard pipes used. The family can get much bigger if studied in details.

House Water Distribution Network:

Common Size Range: (1/4’’ to 8’’)

Copper Pipes:  Copper pipes have been used in plumbing for a very long time. To this day, copper is still the most commonly used material in clean water supply lines. Copper is inherently tolerant of a huge range of temperature changes, from freezing cold to very hot.

The Plastic Family, Range: (1/4’’ to 12’’)

CPVC, PVC, ABS, and PEX Pipes: PVC pipes are a much cheaper and easier to install compared to copper pipes. However less resistant to high temperature change. They are more fragile, lightweight and can burst under high pressure. Usually used for drainage system or housing piping system with low pressure.

Range: (4’’ to 23’’)

HDPE Pipes: Polyethylene pressure pipe is used worldwide for water distribution and transmission systems. They are usually associated with pressure lines coming out of pump stations distributing water to all around the city or town. Piping made from polyethylene is a cost effective solution for a broad range of piping problems in municipal, industrial, marine, mining, landfill, duct and agricultural applications. It has been tested and proven effective for above ground, sur face, buried, sliplined, floating, and sub-sur face marine applications.

Range: (3’’ to 23’’)

Cast Iron / Ductile Iron: One of the most durable material and easy to install piping system for distribution network. Able to withstand high pressure, however more expensive than HDPE pipes, however it provides rapid installation system reducing the overall project time schedule. Usually used in pumping stations with valves, but can also be used in distribution network.

Transmission lines: Oil, Gas and Water

Range: (27’’ to 118’’)

Steel pipes (various grades, various types): Mainly used for transmission lines, high effective against high pressure lines. Commonly used in the supply of oil and gas. High durability and highly resistant to corrosion. Tensile properties are dependent on the type of steel.

Range: (23’’ to 62’’)

HDPE Pipes: For low pressure transmission lines, less durable than Steel and Ductile iron, but cheaper.

Range: (23’’ to 78’’)

Ductile iron:  Suitable to convey sewage and water fluid system at high pressure. Easier installation compared to Steel pipes but steel pipes can sustain higher pressure. It is usually up to the contractor to choose between DI or Steel during transmission lines. Ductile Iron usually cannot be used for oil and gas systems.

AC and Concrete pipes are slowly becoming obsolete for use in water and sewage application.
