Chain of command is important in certain circumstances; in others it may not be as important. For example: If an employee has been a hard and dependable worker for many years and suddenly has an attendance issue, I would not be likely to implement chain of command. I would be more likely to try resolving the issue personally with the employee. Resolving the issue through chain of command could possibly be detrimental to the company if the “good employee” was terminated.

On the other hand, if a new employee had similar attendance issues I would be more likely to solve the problem through chain of command. In this case scenario, termination of the employee through chain of command could be beneficial to the effectiveness of the company.

Chain of command refer to the levels of organization structure. It depends on the size of organization and the characteristic dynamism of the industry. Greater size of organization will add layers to organizational structure since there are more people and more tasks to be performed, however limiting the interaction between top management, junior management and workers which in turn can slow down the feedback from bottom to top and control actions which needs to be taken to address the problems identified at working grade. However, if the company operates in a dynamic business environment which is changing fast, the structure will be flatter to allow immediate feedback from lower grade to top management to manage fast decision making to address price, competition, business dynamics

Thanks for the invitation.

Depending upon the organization's structure, chain of command might be required to function in smooth & disciplined manner. But it may prove to be a bit of hindrance in case of emergency where immediate action is called for.

Chain of command is important to keep all employees in line with company procedures. Because if they is no proper compliance to rules and regulations in a company then there would be chaos in the work place productivity will suffer. Besides every company has a hand book which delivers company policies and dress codes while also stating the penalties they could suffer if not complying.

But to many many chains of command will limit creativeness and prevent employees taking decisions by themselves will solely dependent on the manger to make the decision for him .  This will prevent future leader being groomed to take over in the future.
