The GMDSS enables a ship in distress to send an alert using various radio systems with a very high probability of being received by either shore rescue authorities.

The GMDSS defines four sea areas based on the location and capability of shorebased communications facilities.

Indicating the sea area and coastal stations as follow :

1- Sea area (Zone1) : An area within the radiotelephone coverage of at least one VHF coast station in which continuous DSC (Digital Selective Calling) alerting is available.

2- Sea Area (Zone2) : An area, excluding Sea Area Zone1, within the radiotelephone coverage of at least one MF coast station in which continuous

DSC alerting is available.

3- Sea Area (Zone3) : An area, excluding Sea Areas  (Zone1 and Zone2), within the coverage of an Inmarsat or NAVTEX geostationary satellite in which continuous alerting is available.

4- Sea Area (Zone4): An area outside sea areas (Z1, Z2 and Z3), this area probably can be in some occasions which requires High Tech equipments to transfer the signal of Radiotelephone to responsible authorities.

The four areas mentioned above, requests a high tech which developed by the international maritime to ensure good navigation for ships and provide the needed support.
