The bearing capacity of soil is the maximum average contact pressure between the foundation and the soil which should no produce shear failure in the soil.

In many cases dependent on the foundation design requirements, the maximum allowable settlement will limit the bearing capacity of the soil. In that case the bearing capacity of the soil will be the maximum average contact pressure between the foundation and the soil which should not produce a settlement greater than the allowable design.
