Prior experience in operations/back office may be useful but not necessary for an internal auditor to perform his responsibilities. If an internal auditor holds an appropriate qualification such as CA, and has got training in a reputable audit firm, he is expected to have sufficient skills and experience to understand and analyze the client business, risks and controls.
