There are two types of software:

SYSTEM SOFTWARE

This are programs that are used in maintenance and managing the computer e.g. Firmware, operating system,etc.

APPLICATION SOFTWARE

This are programs that are used to complete tasks as required by an end-user. e.g. word processors, spreadsheets,etc
