Where should we locate the power factor improvement capacitor banks? Near the load or source? and Why?

The capacitor bank is connected to the busbars of the main LV distribution board for the installation, and remains in service during the period of normal load.

Nearer to load in order to compensate the reactive power generated by the inductive loads. if we do not provide the capacitor banks then it adversely effect the transformer. so, the electricity department charge the customers for the lower power factor.

Capacitor Banks should be connected to load side to compensate for Power factor improvement.

Moreover Capacitor banks also help eliminate harmonics from Power system if connected on Load side.

Capacitor banks should be located in the load side.

Electrical loads comprises mostly induction motors. They require lagging reactive power to produce the magnetic field. Capacitor supplies this current.

If we provide capacitor banks in the source side itself, then this lagging current will flow in the lines which will increase the copper loss in the system.

Capacitor banks are designed to compensate for the losses  that originate form inductive loads and smoothes out the  voltage supply. If it is put near a motor only that circuit going to the motor is effected, whereas if it is put at the distribution board the whole installation is subjected to power factor correction.Power factor also makes your consumption costs lower.

Capacitor bank should be located near the load. Most of the load is inductive in nature which is the main cause of power factor disturbance. This type of load needs reactive power and capacitor banks fulfill its demand.
