You have to take courses on control systems basics, PLC and SCADA concepts.if you learn the concepts.  You will be able to deal with any PLC type just you will need to know how it syas it :)

for example:- let's assume two PLCs "A" and "B" and you want to load value of "10" into memory area mem1

  • for PLC "A" :- Load10 , Transfer mem1
  • for PLC "B" :- LD10 , = mem1

if you want to be instrument and control engineer yous should have deep study of control system, instrumentation and measurement, Miro processor and Embedded system and above all Electronics and Electrical and optical fibers. these all are the courses you should study. but courses are not enough untill you have projects learning and for that purpose you must go through studying of some fine projects study i think that will help you too much. just when you study take a pen and paper and note down the points which you come across study and just put new ideas of your studies in those already implemented projects that will help you thinking approach. and one day you will have best approach the problems when you face then in your practical field.

it very good idea to check these skill which is basic to have PE certification   https://cdn.ncees.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/PE-Control-Systems-Oct-2011.pdf

also check the topic and skill in ISA.org

You need Basic knowledge on Instrumentation and Automation, But also Electrical engineering and computer skills.

Moreover, you should practice, by making some trainnings. Courses are not enough in these feilds.
