Other than finding out short and long column, what's the use of slenderness ratio?

As the column lateral deformation depends on the column dimension, so the way of calculation the additional moment on columns (braced or un- braced)  can be find through knowing the slenderness ratio, knowing that the additional moments on columns can be neglected, if the column is short while it is not a zero (small value but not zero).
