Sales representative: is a person employed to represent a business and to sell its merchandise or services, as to customers in a store or customers who are visited. The primary function of professional sales is to generate and to close leads, educate prospects, fill needs and satisfy wants of consumers appropriately, and therefore turn potential customers into actual paying customers. A sales executive has a role more geared towards the administration part of sales and has the function of carrying out of plans or orders. I think the main difference lies on the direct and indirect way of execution of sale of the products...

Representative is the one who represents the indirectly to execute the sale of the product whereas the executive is the one who does the job of selling the product direct to the customer. My 2 cents. Thanks.

Thank you for the invitation and I agree with the experts answers

The difference between the terms are almost non existent today and from an employee view point he should look at the detailed JD. for example in many companies there is almost no difference  in JD between a Sr. Sales Executive and Assistant Sales Manager.

My understanding is that in trading companies, originally The Sales Representatives referred to Principal Company's salesperson and salesman referred to the trading company's sales person. but with time and increased direct door to door selling, general public started looking down on sales representative and then emerged the new generation terminology sales executive.

today particularly in pharmaceutical industry the term sales rep/ medical rep is widely used.
