I have recently read about the 3D printing construction technology. Once this is actually implemented what will be the role of civil engineers?

Following role can be play

1. To create model 

2. In structural Engineering etc

I've recently delivered an oral presentation about 3D printing, my conclusion was that 3D printing would never replace the traditional techniques of manufacturing and building. however in the two or three decades, 3D printing will have a significant impact on a significant portion of products.

The video about the Chinese who used 3D printing for building houses (on YouTube) shows many weakness as he explained. but it is a technology that musn't be underistimated

I haven't been involved in such a project, but this is what some countries are opting for. However below mentioned will what will happen:

1. Role of civil engineer will remain the same but may need become more less involved due to automation.

2. 3D printing is just like modular construction where the modules are printed by automation, where there is less site labour and cost. But still civil engineer should oversee the printing and erection sequence.

3. When 3D printing technique really take off, then civil engineer need to be abreast of technology and update skills for existence.

4. In 3D printing even the final finishes can be achieved and may need less engineers on site to perform duties, but civil engineers are required.

While still the technology is in infant stage, it is advised for an civil engineer to step up and update technological skills of 3D printing.
