When you need to apply an effect to a certen layer or or several without damaging tge original layer, we can use this smart object feture to get that result.
In other words,converting a layer to a smart object will protect the original layer from all the effects you added tio it.
To do this select layer(or multiple layers) you want, on the layer pallet and write click on it and select convert to smart object.
Now you will be able to add multiple feects without damageing the original layer.
