Are you participating in a professional organization (such as IEEE or PMI )? If yes, what is the origination and benefits you got yourself?

For example: I am control engineer and I am member in ISA.org. The main benefit for me is to keep in touch with last information in the industry.  Also I had access to see the international standard.

Five Reasons to Participate with a Professional Organization:

1. Build your network of support.

2. Demonstrate your professionalism.

3. Build your own skills in a supportive environment while learning from your peers.

4. Have a voice that is loud and clear.

5. Give yourself a professional advantage.

When you are associated with professional Organisation of your profession, you are up to date in your profession compared any other professional of the same discipline on Technology; Standards and futuristic development that is coming up. Apart, your industry can easily recognise your status.

Since I am an automotive engineer by profession, I am associated with Society of Automotive Engineers who sets standards for automotive field. My awareness if not knowledge in the industry is advanced and the credit goes to SAE.

Being an Engineer i am associated with 3 Professional bodies.

But i am very sorry to say that the role of these bodies are limited to just check your credentials status that if it is fake or not.

They organize some seminars , workshops and lectures and also publish their journals but the main purpose of doing all this is just commercial.

The most important thing is that when an Engineer is doing a job, he/she is totally dependent on the employer for his leave , participating in these seminars , workshops etc which is never possible as for an employer his business is important not the development of the professional.

So as a conclusion i must say that  the role of these bodies is just to make you a credible engineer to get a job and nothing else.

Basically it is up to you, if you wanna be a member or not. Sometimes it is useful, because you have access to many important information and latest issues of relevant industry standards. Also, you can consult with other members, idea creators and speech fabricators. Personally, I think, they are considering themselves a very important people - engineers, PhDs, professors, who have enough time to think and dream AND PUT ALL THOSE THOUGHTS ON THE PAPER AND SPREAD ACCROSS THE WORLD. In the mean time, professional engineer, like myself, we do not have time to create such stuff, just because we have to deliver projects, we have to comply with industry and job requirements and work tremendous amount of overtime..... And keep up with standards and dream requirements and safety and so on......  I have read enough of those and decided to save the membership fee. Whatever I need to perform, I do have access. Your present employer also might provide you all necessary relevant industry standards, so no need to be a member of any international organization and you can be still a great engineer...
