ITIL and Prince2 – What are the differences?

There are a lot of standards in project management so it can get a bit confusing what to use when and which to study.

Prince2 is focused on managing projects, pieces of work that have a beginning and end. The work could be large, like building a call centre, or small, like a social event. ITIL is focused on service delivery, the stuff that happens after you have built your “thing” in the project. For example, once you have built your call centre in your project, there will now be on-going work where the people in the call centre answer the phone. This service delivery goes on and on for as long as the call centre exists. ITIL is mainly focused on service delivery in the IT sector, whereas Prince2 covers all sectors.

Prince is about managing projects and ITIL is about managing services

ITIL gives you a set of practices for IT service management of your organization. These are not mandatory practices, but you can adopt these practices as per the requirement of your organization.

Prince2 deals with project management. It provides process based approach for project management. These processes are scaleable for any type of project.

Prince2 (PRojects IN Controlled Environments) is a standard project management methodology used for managing a project from project initiation, scope management, time management, quality, procurement, communication, risk management to close. “It has standard procedures, specific forms, to accomplish the project activities.”

but Prince2 focus specially on projects management .
